Clashes in Bishkek

Vladimir Radyuhin

MOSCOW: Opposition demonstrators clashed with Government supporters in Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan, amid mounting demands for the resignation of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev. Six persons were reported hospitalised, including four with gunshot wounds, after clashes erupted near Government buildings in the centre of Bishkek where two rival rallies were held on Tuesday in support and against the Government. Riot police used tear gas to stop the clashes and separate the opponents. Opposition supporters have been demonstrating in Bishkek since last Thursday demanding that the President honour his election pledge to amend the Constitution slashing presidential powers in favour of the legislature.
