Indian Navy records win

NEW DELHI: Saji D'Silva scored two goals as Indian Navy XI outplayed the Delhi team, Garhwal Heroes 3-0 to make it to the second round from Group II in the qualifying round of the Osian's Durand Cup football tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Tuesday.

Navy XI will meet Salgaocar SC, Goa in the second round on Saturday at the Race Course Road ground.

Navy XI defenders, P.S. Sumesh and Vivek Venugopal, fought bravely. D'Silva put Navy XI ahead in the 21st minute when he came down the left wing and sent a right-footer into the goal. Bhupinder Singh provided a ray of hope for Garhwal Heroes when his rasping shot was punched out in time by the Navy goalkeeper in the 35th minute.

On resumption, G.J. Sajith headed in to make it 2-0 in the 66th minute. After conceding the second goal Garhwal Heroes played with more resolve, but its efforts were in vain as the forwards messed up in the finishing. In the 77th minute, D'Silva scored the again connecting a cross from V.S. Abhilash.

Earlier in the day, the Indian Air Force (IAF) XI defeated Amity United, Gurgaon, 2-1 in the Group I first round match. W.P. Singh scored a brace, the first in the 10th minute and the second in 52nd with L. Danny assisting him on both the occasions. Amity United reduced the margin through Tushar, who intercepted a back-pass and beat the IAF XI goalkeeper in the 59th minute. On Saturday, IAF XI will take on BSF, Jalandhar, in the second round.
