TIRUPATI: The CPI(M), which is spearheading a nationwide campaign against the acquisition of fertile agricultural land by the Government to set up Special Economic Zones, is currently organising a `jaatha' under the banner of its farmers' wing, Rythu Sangham.

The All-India `jaatha', as part of its `Chalo Delhi' programme, would be covering all the States before culminating at Delhi for a `Maha Dharna', slated for November 20, to exert pressure on the Central Government to stop indiscriminate acquisition of farmland for the SEZs and also to ensure a fair relief package to the affected farmers.

The All India `jaatha', which set-out on the mission from Kanyakumari, has on Tuesday visited some of the villages to be affected in Sathyavedu and Varadaiahpalem mandals in the wake of the State Government's move to acquire farmland to set up its massive 12,000-acre SEZ in the zone, taking advantage of its proximity to the Chennai-Kolkata National Highway.

The team interacted with the villagers in the two mandals and noted the outpourings of the possible oustees.

The team expressed its dismay with the State Government for its indiscriminate acquisition of fertile farmland even after Congress president Sonia Gandhi had expressed herself firmly against it.

They said the party would take up the issue in the Assembly and Parliament during the winter session and try to rein in the State Government.
