Jimmy George award for Jenil Krishnan

Kozhikode: Jenil Krishnan has won the Jimmy George foundation award for 2006. The rower helped India win the bronze in the men's coxless four-oars team event at the last Asian Games in Busan.

He was chosen for the annual award given to the best athlete of the State by a committee comprising Jose George, Suresh Babu, Robert Bobby George, Sebastian George and T. Devapasad.

The award, into its 18th year, carries Rs.10,000 and was instituted in the memory of Jimmy George, the legendary volleyball player who died in a car accident in 1987 in Italy, where he had been playing for professional clubs.

Semifinalists spotted

Defending champion and host, Chinmaya Vidyalaya (Tripunithura) defeated NSS (Tripunithura) 2-0 and entered the semifinals of the eighth Chinmaya inter-school football tournament at Kannankulangara, on Tuesday. Chinmaya (Vaduthala) and the Bhavan's Vidya Mandir teams (Eroor and Elamakkara) also entered the last four.

The results (quarterfinals): Chinmaya (Tripunithura) bt NSS (Tripunithura) 2-0; Bhavan's (Elamakkara) bt Navy Children (Wellingdon Island) 4-3; Bhavan's (Eroor) bt Rajagiri (Kalamassery) 5-1; Chinmaya (Vaduthala) bt Bhavan's (Girinagar) 3-1.

Pre-quarterfinals: Rajagiri bt Choice (Tripunithura) 1-0.

MG wins title

MG College defeated host DB College, Sasthamcotta by 77 runs and won the Kerala University inter-collegiate cricket tournament at Sasthamcotta on Tuesday.

The scores: MG College 197 for six in 25 overs (Sumesh 54, Madan 49, Manikandan 45) bt DB College 120 in 24.1 overs (Manu 25, Sujith 25, Jins four for 15).

GHSS advances

GHSS, Vengad and KPRGSGHSS, Kallissery entered the semifinals of the Vasuettan memorial inter-school football tournament conducted by the Brothers Club at the Jawahar Stadium at Kannur on Tuesday.

GHSS defeated Panchayath HSS, Pappinssery 2-0 with Fasal (8th) and Sumanesh (31st) scoring.

In another quarterfinal match, KPRGSGHSS defeated SN Trsust, Thottada 3-1. Rishad gave SN Trust a great start by scoring in the eighth minute but Sudeesh struck a brace (13th & 52nd) after Suneer had equalised for the Kalliassery side in the 16th minute.
