Coffee exports set to increase

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Coffee Board chairman G.V.K. Rao on Tuesday said export permits for 2,43,346 tonnes, including re-exports, were issued for the coffee year October 1, 2005 to September 30, 2006, compared to the actual export of 1,98,153 tonnes in the corresponding period last year, accounting for an increase of over 22 per cent.

Board secretary J.N. Raj, who read out Mr. Rao's keynote address at the United Planters Association of South India-Karnataka Planters Association (UPASI-KPA) coffee conference here, said confirmation of exports for the 2005-06 season had crossed 2,31,752 tonnes, realising a value of over Rs. 1,798 crore as on November 3, 2006 compared to Rs. 1,365 crore for the last crop year.

Likewise, Mr. Rao said that for the current financial year, export permits had been issued for around 1,60,341 tonnes as on November 3, 2006 compared to 1,17,255 tonnes on the same day last year. If this trend continued, exports may reach 2,40,000 tonnes in the current financial year.

He said with the annual domestic coffee consumption accounting for about 80,000 tonnes, the total crop estimated by the Board for 2005-06 of 2.74 lakh tonnes. Largely owing to favourable weather conditions, the post-blossom crop estimates for 2006-07 were placed at 3,00,300 tonnes.
