TRADITIONAL WELCOME: Governor Rameswar Thakur at the Sun god temple at Arasavilli in Srikakulam district on Tuesday.
Srikakulam: The police resorted to mild lathicharge on activists of the Students Federation of India when the latter tried to stop the convoy of Governor Rameshwar Thakur at the zilla parishad when he was going from the R&B guest house to the temple at Arasavli on Tuesday. Some squatted on the road. The students were demanding release of scholarships and other benefits. The Governor, who came to the district on a visit, inaugurated a blood bank and medicines bank of Indian Red Cross in Srikakulam. Earlier, Mr. Rameshwar Thakur inaugurated a housing colony built by the Indian Red Cross for tsunami victims in Srikurmam, about 30 km from here, and addressed a public meeting. He said the IRS would mobilise medicines from chemists and druggists free of cost and supply the same to the poor free of cost. If necessary it would seek donations from philanthropists and create a revolving fund to ensure free medicines to the poor who had been suffering from a number of diseases, he said.People in Srikakulam district, especially fishermen who resided along the long coast line, were prone to natural calamities like cyclone and they should be given all help.
Visit to temples
The Governor handed over 48 houses, built by the Red Cross and costing Rs.48 lakhs, to 48 tsunami victims at Srikurmam. He said that a school with an estimated cost of Rs.50 lakhs would be built at the colony. The Governor also distributed economic benefits to the tune of Rs.8.66 crores to beneficiaries selected under various schemes. Earlier the Governor visited temples at Arasavilli and Srikurmam. He was received with temple honours.
