Exnora members petition Mayor

Staff Reporter

Flyovers, roads, encroachments figure in the discussion

Chennai : Members and office-bearers of the Exnora Innovators Clubs of South, Central and North Chennai, met Chennai Mayor M. Subramanian on Sunday seeking immediate action to redress civic grievances.

R. Govindaraj, Secretary, T. Nagar Zone Exnora said that traffic chaos was a major problem. He pointed out that the Chennai Corporation had already passed resolutions in 1999 to construct mini flyovers to avoid traffic congestion at the North Usman Road-Kodambakkam junction, Panagal Park-Doraisamy Road Junction and G.N. Chetty Road-Thirumalai Pillai Road Junction and Rangarajapuram level crossing (Kodambakkam). However, nothing had been done, he pointed out.

K. Ramadoss, President, Ayanavaram Exnora, requested the Mayor to take steps to erect a fence on the New Avadi Road from Kilpauk Water Tank to ICF Junction, to prevent dumping of garbage, littering and encroachment.

He said that there were encroachments along the Konnur High Road, which slowed down traffic.

A representative from Choolai highlighted the plight of people living on A.P. Road, Kalathiappa Mudali (Kona) Street, Rotty Kidangu Street and Sydenhams Road due to water logging and poor road conditions on Santhanna Naicken Street, Elephant Gate Street and Mint Street.

Inundation was a problem highlighted by V. Kausalya, Secretary, Virugambakkam Exnora Womens' Guild. She wanted the Mayor to direct the construction of storm-water drains by the next monsoon.

Issues such as early completion of the Perambur flyover, poor civic conditions in Kotturpuram and removing encroachments on pavements of main roads in T. Nagar and Mambalam, were among those taken up by the Exnora representatives. A.Ramasamy, president, Federation of West Velachery Exnora, said the area was inundated every year during the monsoon. He requested the Mayor to remove the encroachments on the bunds of the Velachery Lake and lay the road connecting East-West Velachery.

Exnora members said the Mayor promised to take immediate action.
