Sanskriti Awards 2006 for young achievers

NEW DELHI : In recognition of young talent in literature, journalism, art, performing arts and social and cultural achievement, Sanskriti Awards 2006 were announced here on Tuesday. The awards will be presented at the India International Centre on November 21. The awards are for young achievers in the age group 25-35.

The award for literature goes to Bengali writer Mitul Dutta. A major voice in literature, she has imparted a new kind of rhythm to her poetry.

The award for journalism goes to freelance journalist Sachin Kumar Jain. He has written about marginalised communities and highlights issues of the poor. He has relentlessly pursued stories to raise the public consciousness.

A. Balasubramaniam will get the award for arts. Born in 1971 in Tamil Nadu, he completed his Bachelor in Fine Arts in the Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai. He studied printmaking in Edinburgh and Vienna.

Actor Ramanjit Kaur bags the award for theatre. Beginning her journey on stage when she was 15, Ms. Kaur established `The Creative Arts' in Kolkata in 2002 to impart formal, systematic training in various fine arts.

Farhad Contractor, who has worked in Barmer in Rajasthan, will be conferred the award for Social and Cultural Achievement. He formed `Sambhaav', an organisation to support development initiatives of small rural groups.
