MOHAN holds patient support group meeting

CHENNAI: The Multi Organ Harvesting Aid Network (MOHAN) held a support group meeting for patients and relatives of patients who have undergone organ transplants at Sundaram Medical Foundation on Sunday morning.

The Network marked the 10th anniversary of its inception on Friday, and has organised an equal number of such support meetings.

Ravi, winner of seven medals at the All India Transplant Games held in Ludhiana this year, was honoured at the event. Malathi Venkatesan, trustee, MOHAN, told the audience that she underwent a transplant 10 years ago and was able to lead a normal life.

Mr. Ravi, an employee at a private hospital, had a renal transplant in March 2003 and was able to rejoin duty a month later. He was motivated to participate in the biennial All India Transplant Games and won two silver medals the first time. Some training and two years later, he won five gold medals, a silver and a bronze at the Games held in Ludhiana. He now aims to participate in the World Transplant Games in Bangkok in 2007. Avinash Ramani, a bioinformatics student and recipient of a transplanted kidney, shared his achievements.

V. Chandrasekaran, consultant nephrologist at the Sri Ramchandra Medical College and Hospital; and Rajeshwari Ramachandran, dietician, Sundaram Medical Foundation; gave the group an overview of kidney disease and the appropriate diet for patients. Later, Sunil Shroff, founder trustee of MOHAN; and Suresh, consultant nephrologist, Sundaram Medical Foundation; answered questions.
