CHENNAI : Music director Ilaiyaraja has decided to institute awards to honour persons, who have served the cause of Tamil literature. The awards will be given on behalf of a new forum called the "Isaignani Ilakiya Perumandram." The Perumandram, according to Ilaiyaraja, is being started to mark the death anniversary of his elder brother Paavalar Varadarajan. "Pavalar Varadarajan was a very talented person and a poet. When I got my breakthrough with `Annakkili' Pavalar Varadarajan was no more," Ilaiyaraja told newspersons on Monday. He said that he wanted to do something in his brother's memory. "He was a genius and if only he were alive he would have ruled this film world with his words and music. I was thinking for sometime what I should do to perpetuate his memory. Now I have decided to institute four awards. "The first award will go to a person who has done yeoman service to Tamil literature. The second will be for the best book written in Tamil. Two awards will be given to young and up and coming poets. All the awards will carry a cash price and a certificate." The awards would be given away on December 2 at the `Thamukkam' grounds in Madurai, where "the audio release of the film `Ajantha', for which I have scored the music, would be held, " he said.
