More UGC aid for Sanskrit university

KOCHI: University Grants Commission (UGC) Vice-Chairman Mool Chand Sharma has said that the commission will provide more financial aid to Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit under the 11th plan.

Delivering a keynote address at the distribution of the first Sree Sankara fellowship here on Tuesday, Professor Sharma said the UGC would support programmes that helped in promoting Indian culture and tradition abroad.

"Sanskrit language has the potential to spread awareness about Indian culture in society. The commission was not able to provide much help for the university under the 10th plan.

Support will be given for initiating developmental work on the campus," he said.

Prof. Sharma said efforts had to be made to set up adequate facilities for researchers interested in pursuing various programmes in Sanskrit. He urged the university authorities to take up projects that would boost Sanskrit studies in the country.

Prof. Sharma presented the first Sree Sankara senior fellowship to R. Balasubramanian on the occasion. The fellowship carries a purse of Rs.2 lakh.
