Panic grips Cong. MLAs, Councillors

Sujay Mehdudia

Government accused of patronising the traders' agitation

  • A large number of Congress Councillors offered to resign from their seats
  • `We will be routed not only in the MCD polls but in the Assembly polls also'

NEW DELHI: Even as the Supreme Court Monitoring Committee spelt out the sealing schedule on Tuesday, there was panic among the Congress MLAs and Councillors who feared that the party's image had been badly tarnished and they would have to face the repercussions of the traders' anger in future political battles. It is learnt that a large number of Congress Councillors offered to resign from their seats on Monday evening at the executive meeting of the Delhi PCC in view of the failure of the Union Government to put an end to the sealing drive.

On the other hand, the Delhi Government's decision to shut down all Government and private schools in the Capital for two days has come under fire. The Government has been accused of patronising the traders' agitation on the Capital's streets. "By taking such an extreme step the Government itself was spreading panic. It is sending a wrong signal about the safety of the children. It is a crucial time of the year for students and all these aspects should be kept in mind before resorting to such drastic measures,'' said the BJP MLA from Saket, Vijay Jolly.

With the Supreme Court giving the green signal for sealing, the Group of Ministers stating that its orders would be implemented as it stands and no relief in sight from the Union Government, the elected representatives have clearly pressed the panic button fearing that it was the end of the road for many of them. "Even if any resolution is arrived at for this problem it hardly matters. The fate of the Congress party is decided and we will be routed in not only the MCD polls scheduled for early next year but in the Assembly polls also. The BJP has been given an issue on the platter,'' said a senior Congress MLA.
