Bonanza for CM, Ministers and MLAs amid sealing

Staff Reporter

House passes Salaries and Allowances Amendment Bill

NEW DELHI: With no end in sight to the sealing drive in the Capital, the Chief Minister, her Council of Ministers and MLAs on Tuesday at least ensured passage of the Bill almost doubling their salaries from what they are getting at present. BJP MLA Vijay Jolly termed the hike as unwarranted stating it would send a wrong message to the masses.

On a day when the ruling Congress MLAs ducked the sealing issue and instead decided to press ahead with the bonanza for themselves, it took the House only a few minutes to pass the Members of Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Salaries and Allowances) (Amendment) Bill 2006 clearing the decks for a salary hike. A similar Bill to hike the salaries of the Chief Minister and Ministers was also passed by the House.

The MLAs did not even find it necessary to debate the legislation and passed it with voice vote without any murmur of protest from any section of the House. Outside the House, Mr. Jolly and another BJP MLA Karan Singh Tanwar said the Bill should have been deferred as the atmosphere was not conducive for increasing the MLAs' salaries. The House also passed the Delhi Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill 2006 empowering people who had bought apartments and flats on General Power of Attorney to become regular members of the cooperative group housing societies.
