Corrections and clarifications

  • In "Jessica case: Bench refuses to recuse itself" (Delhi edition, November 8, 2006, page 1), the sentence was: "Mr. Jethmalani also toned down his charge of contempt of court against the newspaper, submitting that he did want them to go to jail ... ." A few readers point out that it should have been "submitting that he did not want them to go to jail ... ."

  • The sentence in "Jamnalal Bajaj awards presented" (November 7, 2006) was: "The work done by SEARCH [Society for Education, Action and Research in Community Health] has reduced the infant mortality rate in the area from 12 to 30 per cent per 1000." A reader points out that the use of the word per cent is incorrect because infant mortality is always counted per 1000.

  • A clarification to a clarification. In "Corrections and Clarifications" (November 7, 2006), a reader had pointed out that the counter-attack by the LTTE on the Sri Lankan Army in which 130 soldiers died was on October 11, 2006. An article by Iqbal Athas, "A 9 deadlock: End of the road for peace process", that appeared in Sri Lanka's The Sunday Times Online (November 5, 2006), says that in the fighting from August 11 to 26, 16 officers and 171 soldiers were killed, while in the October 11 attack on the Sri Lankan Army, more than 18 officers and 128 soldiers were killed.
