NEW DELHI : India has described as a victory for the people of the Himalayan nation the peace accord between the Government and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). "We welcome this significant step [which will bring the Maoists into an interim Government and Parliament] in Nepal's democratic progress to a settled constitutional order in which the people can realise their aspirations for peace and prosperity," External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said in a statement here. "We look forward to the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement on November 16, 2006 as was decided today [Wednesday]. The people of Nepal must have the right to freely choose and decide their own destiny and future without fear of the gun." "India stands ready, as always, to extend its full support to the efforts of the Government and people of Nepal," Mr. Mukherjee said.
