Puducherry: The Bi-annual Economic Survey (April to September 2006) conducted by the southern regional wing of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for the Union Territory has stressed that the administration should ensure proper training for the service providers for improving the overall efficiency in tourism here. A release from the CII, Puducherry unit, said on Tuesday that there was 35 per cent increase in inflow of tourists into the Union Territory during the bi-annual period of the current fiscal (2006-2007), compared to the same period last fiscal. There was 25 per cent increase in revenue and the tourism sector had shown a healthy performance. The survey called for development of infrastructure to boost inflow of tourists into the Union Territory. The survey covered tourism, information technology, automotive and auto components industry. It said that there was generally a good performance of these sectors during the six-month period. The IT sector had registered 20 to 30 per cent revenue growth besides an increase in overseas billing by 30 per cent. There was an increase in employment level by 10 per cent in this sector, it stated. Assessing that the automotive and auto components industry, it said it had shown a moderate growth and there was an expectation that there would be a fairly impressive growth during the remaining part of the current fiscal. Food processing industry had shown good performance and will continue to do so. Government should give importance for production of oil seeds.
