CHENNAI: Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) services, which cover a maximum of 40 km around Chennai now, will be extended up to 50-km radius. This will help people in far-flung areas to use the services without changing buses and at an affordable cost, officials told The Hindu , explaining the advantages to commuters resulting from the extension of operations. After the change, the services would be operated to 396 villages in Tiruvallur district and 346 villages in Kancheepuram district, the MTC officials said. In the southern direction, the services operated up to Guduvanchery would be extended up to Paranur near Chengalpattu; in the west, up to Pandoor in Tiruvallur district; in the north up to Elavoor near Ponneri; up to Mambakkam beyond Sriperumbudur off the Chennai-Bangalore highway; up to Alathoor beyond Tiruporur on the Old Mahabalipuram Road and up to Pattipulam on the East Coast Road. Sources in the MTC said the services would be operated only after identifying sites for opening depots and termini in the extended area. Work was on in Transport Corporation units to build new buses. In all, 100 new buses would be flagged off in December first week.
