BANGALORE: The State Government has exempted the pillion passengers from wearing helmets and the rule came into effect from November 4. Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Home Minister M.P. Prakash said the pillion riders had been exempted from wearing helmets. The Government on October 27, 2006, issued a notification calling for objections from the public for exempting the wearing of helmets by pillion passengers of two wheelers. Not a single objection was filed, he said. The rule making helmets mandatory by two-wheeler riders came into effect from November 1. The rule would be in force in the limits of Bangalore city and five other city corporation areas in the State.
Law university
The Cabinet, which will meet on Friday, will clear the proposal on establishing the Karnataka Law University in Hubli. The Finance Department has already given its approval, he said. A 54-acre plot between Hubli-Dharwad had been identified for the university. It would become functional from the next academic year (2007-08).
KSRP centre
The Government had decided to set up a Karnataka State Reserve Police centre at S.M. Krishna Colony in Hassan. A 20-acre plot in the 453-acre colony had been identified for the purpose. The Finance Department had released Rs. 8 crore for the Hassan Urban Development Authority to set up the centre, he said.
Sainik Welfare Fund offices
Offices of the Sainik Welfare Fund would be established in Hassan, Bellary and Bagalkot for the convenience of ex-soldiers and their dependents, Mr. Prakash said. There were 73,882 ex-soldiers in the State, he said. Now, the fund had offices in Tumkur, Kolar, Udupi, Davangere, Gadag and Bidar districts.
Constable posts
The Home Department had decided to fill 4,317 police constables posts by January 2007. A decision had also been taken to fill 368 posts sub-inspector and 1,811 posts in the Fire Services Department by February, 2007 Mr. Prakash added.
