Cabinet clears proposal for IIT

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The cabinet on Wednesday cleared the proposal to set up an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Palakkad and an Indian Institute of Science Education and Research in Thiruvananthapuram. This was disclosed here on Wednesday by Education Minister M.A. Baby. He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the inaugural ceremony of the `Suvarna Keralam' celebrations of the University of Kerala. — Staff Reporter

Krishnadas to assume charge tomorrow

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The newly elected BJP State president P.K. Krishnadas will assume charge at a function to be held at the party headquarters here on November 10. Mr. Krishnadas will be received at the Central railway station by the party workers in the morning and taken on a procession to the party headquarters, says a party release. - Special Correspondent

Electrocution: KSEB suspends 3 employees

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Electricity Board has suspended from service three of its employees in connection with the death of a contract labourer, Suresh, while attending to work on an 11-kV power transmission line at Aroor in Alappuzha district on Tuesday. The suspended officials are sub-engineer S. Sunil, overseer P.K. Thomas and lineman V. Shaji. The KSEB would give an assistance of Rs.50,000 to Suresh's family. Those injured in the incident would receive an assistance of Rs.10,000 each. — Special Correspondent

UDF loses control of cooperative union

Thiruvananthapuram: Differences in the UDF had resulted in the defeat of its candidates in the elections to the State Cooperative Union held here on Wednesday. The CPI(M) candidate E. Narayanan, Rubco Chairman, defeated the UDF candidate V.S. Hareendranath because three members of the CMPabstained from voting. The UDF has nine members in the Cooperative Union, with four belonging to the Congress, three to the CMP and one to the IUML. The CPI(M) has six members, including two nominated members. With the Government nominee on the union board voting in favour of the CPI(M) candidate, the UDF found itself losing control over the institution. — Special Correspondent

`No plan to drop power highway'

PATHANAMTHITTA: Minister for Electricity A.K. Balan has said there is no question of the State dropping the Koodamkulam power highway project aimed at bringing the State's share of 226 MW of power from the Koodamkulam Atomic Power Plant in Tamil Nadu. The Minister who visited the district to inaugurate the Electrical Section Office of the KSEB at Vechoochira near Ranni was talking to reporters on Wednesday. — Staff Reporter

Ex-servicemen's protest

KOLLAM: The district committee of the Kerala State Ex-Services League will organise a march and a dharna in front of the collectorate here on Thursday as part of a State-wide protest. The march will commence from the Chinnakada Rest House junction. The dharna, to be inaugurated by Kollam MP P. Rajendran, will be presided over by district president of the league N.P. Muraleedharan Pillai. The protest is in support of the various demands raised by the ex-servicemen. All ex-servicemen, their dependents and members of the women's wing of the league will participate in the dharna, Captain Pillai told mediapersons. - Staff Reporter

College ministerial staff meet

KOLLAM: The golden jubilee conference of the Kerala Private College Ministerial Staff Federation will be held here on November 10 and 11.

Federation president P.K. Mathew told presspersons here on Wednesday that the conference would begin with a meeting of the State general council on Friday. At 4 p.m. the same day, Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan will inaugurate a trade union conference. Fisheries Minister S. Sarma will deliver the keynote address. On Saturday, Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy will formally inaugurate the conference. Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran will deliver the keynote address.

`Luminance' from Friday

KOTTAYAM: Luminance 2006, the management meet being organised by the DC School of Management and Technology will start at Wagamon on Friday. Minister for Finance Thomas Isaac will inaugurate the meet and M.V. Shreyams Kumar will deliver the keynote address. Business quiz, programmes based on new products, human resources, communication skills, web designing, management etc have been organised as part of the two-day programme.

DYFI district meet

KOTTAYAM: The 10th district conference of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) will begin at Thalayolaparambu near here on Friday, DYFI State vice-president K. Anil Kumar has said. The four-day conference will be inaugurated by Minister for Education and Culture M.A. Baby. Speaking to journalists, Mr. Anilkumar said the DYFI has registered a steady growth in the district and during this year's conference, 290 delegates would participate. — Staff Reporter

Resource persons to be trained

KOCHI: Workshops for some 200 resource persons selected to train schoolteachers in the Adolescent Education Programme will begin on Monday. The resource persons are from the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and DIET. The workshops will be held in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. — Special Correspondent
