Another crisis likely to hit film industry

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The problem-prone Kannada cinema industry is likely to face another crisis with the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) deciding to withdraw its working agreement with the Karnataka Chalanachitra Karmikara Kalavidara Tantrajnara Okkuta.

The decision is likely to affect over 3,000 workers and cause uncertainty in the industry. It will have a bearing on the business prospects of non-Kannada cinema in the State.

Reacting to the decision of the KFCC, Ashok, president of the okkuta, told presspersons here on Wednesday that the issue could be resolved if Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Ambareesh intervened in the matter.

However, the okkuta would hold prayers at Rajkumar's Samadhi on November 12. It would take a decision on the action to be taken after that, he said.

He alleged that the episode was reportedly engineered by a producer who was responsible for the release of a dubbed film.

Mr. Ashok said the okkuta was a federation of 15 registered bodies related to the industry and affiliated to the All-India Film Employees' Confederation and the Union Network International (Media wing). The KFCC could only withdraw the agreement and not the okkuta's recognition as projected in a section of the media, he added.

On November 3, the okkuta complained against some producers who had allegedly assaulted director Rajendrakumar Arya in Bangalore and abused actor Ravichandran in Ooty. It had decided not to work for the films produced by those producers, including president of the Kannada Chalanachitra Nirmapakara Sangha Sandesh Nagaraju, who were planning to release cinemas of other languages dubbed into Kannada, he said.

On November 6, the KFCC requested the okkuta to withdraw its boycott. On Tuesday, the okkuta expressed its "willingness to end the row.
