THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Universities in the State should introspect and find out whether they have been successful in giving a sense of direction to society by turning out culturally refined students and by breaking new paths to optimise the utilisation of the State's human resource potential, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said. He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the `Suvarna Keralam' celebrations of the University of Kerala here on Wednesday. Universities should be centres where discoveries are made. The State's universities had not done enough on this count. This had to be changed and the universities had to become more creative, he said. The LDF Government had initiated steps to free universities from the total control of the Government and to ensure their autonomy. The University of Kerala had rendered signal service to ensure all-round development of the higher education sector in the State, he said. Minister for Education M.A. Baby said the Government had put in place a plan to check the dip in quality in centres of higher learning. If reforms were to be effected in higher education, the process must begin at the primary education level, he added. Vice-Chancellor M.K. Ramachandran Nair, Minister for Law M. Vijayakumar and the former Vice-Chancellor of the university G. Balamohan Thampi spoke. A cultural programme was organised as part of the inaugural ceremony. While Neena Prasad and party presented `Kerala Vandanam,' a team from Government College for Women presented `Thiruvathirakali,' and a teacher-student duo from Swathi Thirunal music college presented `Kerala Nadanam.'
