Temporary relief for college teachers

FOR TEACHERS who were affected by a recent government order withholding salary grants for 49 colleges rated lower "B" grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), there is a reprieve: The Government has put on hold the order for one year.

If implemented, the order would have resulted in non-payment of salaries to 2,000 teaching and non-teaching staff. While welcoming the revised direction, the Bangalore University College Teachers' Association (BUCTA) has noted that it would only bring temporary relief to teachers. It has urged the Higher Education Minister to hold a discussion on the issue with teachers' federations, college managements and Education Department officials. What is required is a permanent solution, providing lasting relief to the teaching and non-teaching staff, without compromising on the quality and standard of education, says association president K.G. Lokesh.
