A sportsman with a never-say-die spirit

After cataract surgery, Kapil Dev the golfer is back

Cricketer Kapil Dev has been one of the fittest sportspersons of his time. Even though he spearheaded the Indian fast bowling attack, in his long and distinguished career Kapil Dev hardly ever missed a game due to fitness problems -- something that afflicts the Indian cricket team so often these days.

Even now that he has retired from cricket, Kapil continues to indulge in active sports by pursuing his new passion: golf.

With a never-say-die attitude, he remains an ardent sportsperson to the core. But age catches up with everyone and a few months ago Kapil missed a shot while playing golf due to a slightly blurred vision.

When the problem persisted, he got it examined and it was diagnosed to be a case of cataract.

But once again Kapil has virtually got back "the vision he was born with'' with the help of a specialised surgery in which a ReSTOR intraocular lens was implanted.

"Cataract affected my performance on the field. As a good golfer you need to have excellent vision. But after my cataract surgery I can see my target in the golf course as clearly as I could see a swinging cricket ball in my twenties.''

Surely the ace sportsman who won India its only World Cup in 1983 will, with his positive outlook, continue to make news with his on-field achievements. -- Gaurav Vivek Bhatnagar
