Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Child Welfare Council has announced the State-level bravery awards for five children. Angel Varghese, 7, from Thrissur bagged the award for rescuing a drowning child from a septic tank near her house. Angel is a student of Class II at Vidyajyothi English Medium High School. Another award winner, Joel Salim Jacob, 10, a student of Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Ernakulam, had braved his injuries to save the lives of three persons caught in a car which plunged into a ravine at Parumala during a picnic. While P.P. Arshad, 13, from Kozhikode, was selected for saving his friend who had come into contact with a live electric wire, M. Bijesh, 14, from Kannur, displayed exceptional courage to rescue three children from drowning in a river. T. Nitin, 16, of Kasaragod, was recognised for risking his own life to save two youth who were drowning in a pond. The award winners were selected by Police Training College Principal K. Rajan Babu. A press release quoting the child welfare council administrator B. Rajagopal said the entries for the State awards had been submitted for the national-level competition. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will give away the awards at a function to be held here on November 21.
