Bangalore: Finally, Microsoft has set a firm date for the global availability of the long-promised, much-delayed next avatar of its personal computer operating system, Windows. The new version, Windows Vista will become available to consumers on January 30, 2007. On Wednesday, the company announced from its Redmond (Washington) U.S-based headquarters that the final development milestone had been crossed and the product had been `released to manufacturing'. The release will come almost 5 years after the release of the last edition - Windows XP - in 2002 and promises a number of new features: A desktop search feature integrated with the `start' Menu.
`Live' taskbar: Resting the mouse pointer over a taskbar item displays a live thumbnail, showing the content of that window. Flip 3D: Scrolling with your mouse flips open multiple windows in a stack, to quickly locate one you want to work with. Saying what you see: Enhanced voice recognition features that allow the user to dictate documents and e-mail messages and fill out forms on the Web using voice commands. There are also indications that Microsoft will beef up security and build in anti- virus and spam-detecting technology that might obviate the need to install third- party security software.
