MUMBAI: Adjusting to a downward correction in the last two days, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex on Thursday surged by 65 points in continued volatility amid mixed pattern of trading in Asian markets. The BSE 30-share Sensex fluctuated between 13192.89 and 13069.85 before closing 64.98 points higher at 13137.49. The Sensex had shed 114.38 points in two days. Similarly, the National Stock Exchange's S&P CNX Nifty recovered by 19.10 points to 3796.40. Investors, who took profits in Wednesday's session, were engaged in covering short positions during the day. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) reported net sales of about Rs. 749 crore in the futures segment on November 8. Brokers said the market sentiment had turned bullish on the back of consistent inflows from FIIs, who have pumped in over $7 billion so far in the Indian equity market. The net FII inflow is pegged at $7.03 billion till November 7. Meanwhile, Asian markets showed a mixed trend. Hong Kong's Hang Seng ended up by 141.62 points, Singapore ST by 10.29 points and Korea's Kopsi by 19.37 points. However, Japan's Nikkei was down by 17.17 points and Taiwan's index by 27.21 points. Key stocks such as RIL, Infosys Technologies, ONGC, HDFC Bank, HLL, ICICI Bank, Satyam Computer, Tata Steel and Reliance Communication registered handsome gains. The market breadth was positive with 1,478 counters registering gains while 1,013 others showing losses at close. The trading volume moved down further to Rs. 4,236.14 crore from Rs. 4,339.72 crore.
