U.S. not self-appointed power to wage war, says Krishna Iyer

KOCHI: V.R. Krishna Iyer, former Supreme Court Judge, has said in a statement:

In the unipolar world, sovereignty is invisible and only the U.N. and the Security Council can sanction invasions on behalf of the people of the world. That too, under conditions of strict and compelling necessity. Otherwise the world order vanishes into vanity.

America has no divine right to invade Iraq and liquidate 25 lakhs or more innocent humans without being guilty of international crime. If Saddam has violated human rights as a dreadful dictator, it is for the people of his country to rise in revolt. The U.S. is not self-appointed power to wage war in other countries on its own decisions. But this is what has happened — with Bush being abetted by Blair vicariously guilty in attacking Iraq. Humanity everywhere stood shocked by this lawless aggression launched by the White House.

What is more, America has appointed a chosen and specifically selected judiciary and manipulated the due process in defiance of every canon of natural justice.

This Iraqi ruler, assuming he was a terror and dictator, cannot be burdened with the injustices of Bush-backed American war power. I am sad that the great people of America, whose glorious declaration of independence had triumphed against Hitler, are now sharing the blame for a war crime committed by their unpopular president. Let me record my profound reverence to the values and vision of millions of Americans while condemning the barbaric war crimes perpetuated by its Government led by Bush.
