Special Correspondent
GULBARGA: Deputy Commissioner Pankajkumar Pandey on Thursday ordered a detailed survey of crops damaged in the hailstorm and heavy rain in parts of Aland, Afsalpur and Jewargi Taluk on November 7 and submit a report to the Government immediately for payment of the compensation to farmers. Responding to demands made by a delegation of the Congress leaders led by former Minister Qamarul Islam, DCC president Allamprabhu Patil and others, Mr. Pandey said that the survey would be taken up immediately by the Revenue and Agriculture Department officials. Mr. Allamprabhu, in a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, said the hailstorm and heavy rain on November 7 had left behind a trail of destruction. Hundreds of acres of sugarcane and banana fields on the banks of the Bhima and Amarja were flooded. He said the district administration should take up a survey and take steps to pay compensation to farmers who had sustained heavy loss. The Congress delegation sought exemption in helmet rule for two-wheeler riders in Gulbarga, Bijapur and Raichur districts. As in Bellary, hot climatic conditions prevailed in Gulbarga, Bijapur and Raichur, they said. The reason cited for exempting Bellary was applicable to these three districts also, they said. Deputy Commissioner said he had contacted the Government on the issue. The Government had clarified that there was no representation from Gulbarga seeking exemption from helmet rule so far.
Re-survey
The Deputy Commissioner also told the delegation that the district administration had begun re-survey of families for the supply of ration cards. It would be taken up in Aland and Afsalpur taluks on November 17 and in Gulbarga city on November 22 and 23. The work would be completed by November 27 and the fresh cards would be issued to the beneficiaries. Meanwhile, the State Government had directed that till the resurvey was completed and new cards issued, the families holding the BPL cards issued earlier, should be permitted to purchase foodgrains from ration shops.
