GULBARGA: Dalit women staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Thursday demanding shifting of a liquor shop from the Ram Nagar Slum area. The procession was taken out under the aegis of Dr. Ambedkar Horata Samiti. Residents of the area, mainly Dalit women belonging to the Konchi Korava community, demanded that Deputy Commissioner Pankajkumar Pandey intervene and ensure that the shop was shifted. They said families were in distress owing to alcoholism. They pointed out that the location of the bar in the midst of a slum was against excise rules and regulations. The women demanded that the district administration provide approach roads, internal roads, streetlights and drinking water to their locality. In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, the samiti said Dalits living in the slum should be provided houses either under the Ashraya or Ambedkar housing schemes.
