MOSCOW: An acute political crisis was defused in Kyrgyzstan after the President and the Opposition agreed on a compromise version of constitutional changes. The revised Constitution redistributes powers from the President to Parliament, but not quite as radically as the Opposition demanded. The legislators will get the right to appoint Prime Minister, whereas Ministers will be chosen through consultations between the President and the Prime Minister. The President will also retain the right to sack the Chief Prosecutor and the head of the Central Election Committee, as well as to appoint local judges. As part of the package deal, incumbent President Kurmambek Bakiyev and Prime Minister Felix Kulov will serve till the end of their term in 2010.
