Kalimuthu laid to rest

SIVAKASI: The mortal remains of former Assembly Speaker, K. Kalimuthu, was laid to rest at his native village Ramuthevanpatti near here on Thursday.

A large number of people and party leaders paid homage to Kalimuthu who died in Chennai on Wednesday. — Staff Reporter

Four electrocuted

Coimbatore: Four persons, including three women, were electrocuted when they accidentally came into contact with live electric lines in two incidents on Wednesday and Thursday.

According to police, Jayamani (45) suffered a shock when she tried to dry clothes on a live wire on Wednesday afternoon. Her husband Natarajan (55), who went to her rescue, was also electrocuted. On Thursday, at Udayampalayam in the city, Subbathal (85) stepped on a snapped power line and was electrocuted on her way to a nearby public toilet. Her daughter Santhamani (55) who ran to her rescue was also electrocuted. — Staff Reporter

Financial aid given

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday handed over a cheque of Rs.1.5 lakh to Dhanalakshmi, mother of Ramesh Kumar who died in police firing at a DMK procession on August 12, 2001. He also announced that Ramesh Kumar's brother S.Ganesan will be granted a job as Junior Assistant in the Seerkazhi revenue office. — Special Correspondent

New Commissioner of Police for Tiruchi

CHENNAI: Shankar Jiwal, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), is the new Commissioner of Police, Tiruchirappalli City. He was hitherto south zone Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau in Chennai. Mr. Jiwal, an IPS officer of the 1990 batch, replaces Sunil Kumar Singh who has been transferred and posted as DIG, Armed Police, Tiruchirappalli.

In the latest shuffle of police officers, I. Raja, who was hitherto Inspector General of Police (IG), Headquarters, Chennai, is the new IG, Railways, Chennai, in an existing vacancy.

Other postings: Karan Singha has been posted as DIG, Coastal Security Group, Chennai; D. Kalpana Nayak as Superintendent of Police, Nagapattinam district in the place of R. Tamil Chandran, who has been posted as Deputy Commissioner, Crime, Coimbatore city; J. Ravindran as Deputy Commissioner, Headquarters, Madurai city and Anisa Husain as Superintendent of Police, Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board, Chennai. — Special Correspondent

Chief Minister thanked

CHENNAI: Tamilnadu Cooperative Employees Federation thanked the Chief Minister for regularising the services of 35,000 cooperative employees. — Special Correspondent

Judge to retire

CHENNAI: Justice AR. Ramalingam of the Madras High Court is scheduled to retire on November 10. With his superannuation, the sitting strength of Judges in the court will come down to 44, as against the sanctioned strength of 49. The Judge will be given a farewell by his fellow Judges, court officers and advocates in the court premises at 4 p.m. on Friday. — Special Correspondent

Stage protest

PUDUKOTTAI: Members of the Pudukottai district unit of Tamil Nadu Government Employees Association staged a `dharna' in front of the Treasury offices at seven centres in the district on Thursday. They were protesting the issue of salaries through banks.

The district secretary of the association, Nagarajan, led the protest here. Similar protests were held at Avudayar Koil, Gandharvakottai, Aranthangi, Alangudi, Thirumayam and Keeranur.

Surprise check

TIRUCHI: A surprise check was conducted by fying squad officials in 50 ration shops in Tiruchi region on Thursday.

Irregularities in the form of underweight, fake bills etc., to the tune of Rs. 38,939 were detected. Action has been initiated against the errant employees, a press release from the Cooperative Department here said.

Verdict condemned

PUDDUKOTTAI: Cadres of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a demonstration at four centres protesting the death sentence awarded to former Iraqi President Saddam Hussain on Thursday. At Manamelkudi, the district secretary of CITU, Selvaraj, led the demonstration.

Similar agitations were held at Aranthangi, Parambur and Gandharvakottai.

Held with fake passport

TIRUCHI: Immigration sleuths held a 36-year-old man at the airport here on Thursday when he attempted to travel with a fake passport.

Ganesan was caught when he tried to board a flight from here to Damam.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The water level at Mettur dam stood at 106.24 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 14,964 cusecs and the outflow 100 cusecs. - Staff Reporter

Man falls to death

ERODE: Sixty-year-old Rangasamy's body was found at a bleaching factory in Vairapalayam on Thursday. Karungalpalayam Police said preliminary investigation suggested that it could be a suicide.

According to the police, Rangasamy's body was found floating in a tank with bleaching chemicals. "One of his colleagues found the body floating and informed us," an officer said.

They added that his neighbour last spotted him on Tuesday evening, when he was said to be moving around in an inebriated condition. The deceased was employed at the factory for the last three years. The factory bleaches dhotis.

Man held on charges of domestic violence

ERODE: Police on Wednesday arrested 42-year-old Raja on charges of beating wife under the domestic violence prevention act. The action was based on a complaint filed by his wife, Shanti, who alleged that Raja regularly bashed her as well as her three daughters.

Mrs. Shanti stated in her complaint that Raja returned home often in inebriated condition, picked up a quarrel with her and bashed her up.

A few days ago, he sent her packing to her parents' house demanding Rs. 50,000. The police subsequently produced the husband, a powerloom worker, before a Tiruchengode Magistrate, who remanded him in judicial custody.

Cases registered against 15 firms

ERODE: Labour Inspectorate, Erode, has registered cases against 15 establishments, mostly eateries, on charges of not paying minimum wages to employees. A release from the office says during a raid on Thursday it was found that 31 employees were working for pay far below the minimum wages. The raid was following instructions from senior labour welfare officers, says the release. The offences will be tried under the Minimum Wages Act. The release also warned establishment owners to not violate the stipulations of the Act.

Loan to set up mobile washing units

SALEM: The district administration would provide loan with subsidy to eligible persons for setting up mobile washing units.A Collectorate press release said that Rs. 5,000 would be provided to an eligible person. Of which, Rs. 2,000 would be provided as subsidy. Interested persons should submit their applications to the Joint Registrar of Cooperatives or the District Backward Class and Minority welfare officer.

Distributed

YERCAUD: The Women and Child Development Trust distributed uniforms and notebooks free of cost to 80 students at a function held in the Muluvi Panchayat Union Elementary School in Yercaud.

Hall tickets

SALEM: Candidates who have applied to appear for the government examinations for dance, drawing, tailoring and Indian music can receive their hall tickets from the respective examination centres.

Four arrested

Nagercoil: Police arrested a four-member gang on Thursday on a charge of burgling houses in Thiruvattar, Kuzuthurai and Rajakkamangalam areas. According to the police, Sankili (22), Anandan (43), Rajan (37) and Muthuswamy (40) of Kamarajarpuram in Virudhunagar district were indulged in chain snatching and burglary. The were arrested at Kannumamoodu near Kalliakkavilai. Gold ornaments worth Rs.4 lakh and Rs.50,000 as cash were recovered from them.
