R.K. Radhakrishnan with Bureau inputs CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday wanted the police to concentrate on maintaining law and order in vulnerable places in Chennai and other important cities in the State. After chairing an unscheduled meeting of the police top brass to review the functioning of the force, he told The Hindu that he discussed in detail security aspects against the backdrop of a few incidents in the past week. The Chief Minister said that he had read the story on law and order in The Hindu and since he too had the same thoughts on the situation, he called for an urgent meeting. "I am satisfied with the law and order situation in the State. I call the officials for meetings so that they function even better," he said and added that a series of steps had been planned to ensure optimum use of the force. As part of the plan, the strength of Chennai city police would be increased. There was a plan to redistribute work so that police personnel shared their duties and responsibilities, thereby ensuring better management of available resources. Answering a question on the murder of an anti-social element in the city a couple of days ago, he said he had emphasised the need for taking preventive measures after knowing in advance the vengeful attitude, if any, of those coming out on bail. Mr. Karunanidhi said the company, which recently provided 100 cars to the police for patrolling, had said it would extend the facility to other cities. Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy, Director-General of Police D.Mukherjee were among those who participated in the meeting.
Promoted
The city police promoted 220 head constables sub-inspectors and issued orders here on Thursday. According to a senior officer, the city police would get 160 sub-inspectors for the law and order wing, while 60 sub-inspectors would be posted with the armed reserve. As for the vacancies in the city police, against a sanctioned strength of 17,500 personnel, the city had 15,000 personnel in various units, special wings and police stations, he added. Immediately after the review meeting, Mr.Karunanidhi chaired a meeting of the State Cabinet. "It was a routine meeting," an official said.
