Foundation for art gallery laid

Art gallery would have a total of 6,500 sq. ft area

KOZHIKODE: Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty laid the foundation stone for a two-storiey art gallery in the city build by the Corporation on the occasion of its 140-th anniversary and golden jubilee of State formation at the Town Hall premises here.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone, the Minister said that the art gallery would certainly benefit the city dwellers who already feel suffocated by the fast-paced urban life. The art gallery, proposed to be constructed on 32 cents, would have a total of 6,500 sq. ft area. There will be an exhibition hall of nearly 3,000 sq ft in each floor of the two-storied building. An information centre-cum-office will be another facility. A compound wall, which could be utilised for exhibiting paintings, and a `padippura' would be the added attractions of the total Rs.95-lakh project. The art gallery was expected to be completed in a year.

Artist Namboodiri, who spoke on the occasion, said that paintings of artists from Kerala were now being sold on a national level.

C.N. Karunakaran, chairman, Lalithakala Akademi said that in general, those taking to paintings were not financially sound.

The Government should come forward to encourage these talents, he said.

Mayor M. Bhaskaran presided. P.Venugopal, secretary, Kozhikode corporation, P.T. Abdul Latheef, deputy mayor, A. Pradeep Kumar, MLA, and U.A. Khader, writer, were among those who spoke.
