Chennai: Tamil Nadu overcame a slow start to defeat Punjab 76-54 in the basketball final of the National women's sports festival (Group I), at the SDAT Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Thursday. Victoria P. Mathew scored 32 points for the winning team, with Amutha (16) doing her bit for the host. Earlier, Victoria took Tamil Nadu to the final after the host prevailed 69-67 over Madhya Pradesh in a tight encounter. Punjab got the better of West Bengal 66-34 in the other semifinal. The results: Basketball: Final: Tamil Nadu 76 (Victoria P. Mathew 32, Amutha 16) beat Punjab 54 (Ranjeet Kaur 12). Third Place match: Madhya Pradesh 63 (Sukur Mani Oraon 16, Poushali Dutta 15) beat West Bengal 47 (Nanda Jain 28, Nidhi Chandra 19). Semifinals: Tamil Nadu 69 (Victoria 26) beat Madhya Pradesh 67 (Nanda Jain 22, Revathy 18); Punjab 66 (Rajnarinder Kaur 22, Rajni 15) beat West Bengal 34 (Rinki Rakshit 12, Poushali Dutta 10).
