MADURAI: Despite plenty of campaign and awareness programmes, the stigma attached to persons living with disability still persists. Society looks at them from both the extremes, some scorn at them while others embarrass them with their sympathetic approach. Most of the times the fear of facing society drives the parents to keep away the disabled children from the eyes of their neighbours. Such an act not only disturbs the mental stability of the disabled but also develops an insecure feeling among the blood relations. In due course, the child lives a reclusive life. Hence, in an attempt to get rid of such complications, the Akshaya Rehabilitation Trust, a non-governmental organisation, which works for the welfare of the disabled people, organised an orientation programme for parents recently. The parents were briefed about the mental trauma of the disabled children and also about the success stories. They were also encouraged to accept the fact and try to treat such children like normal persons. The trust had planned to invite the blood relations and neighbours also for such programmes, which would be conducted on a regular basis said K. Kathiresan, project director of the trust.
