NEW DELHI: A 55-year-old businessman who allegedly set himself afire at Jaffarpur Kalan in South-West Delhi on Wednesday has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Safdarjung Hospital with 70 per cent burns. The police said he took the extreme step apparently due to a family dispute. The police said Wazir Chand, a resident of Prem Nagar, set himself afire at Sureda Mod on Dhansa-Najafgarh Road around 10 a.m. on Wednesday. They said the doctor attending to Wazir Chand had informed them that the victim had set himself afire over a family dispute. The local police have initiated inquest proceedings into the incident. However, a youth, Jatin, who identified himself as a nephew of Wazir Chand, claimed that the incident was related to the ongoing sealing drive. "Earlier we did not know why he had set himself afire. Today, when he regained consciousness, he told me that he tried to end his life thinking it would help save the shops of his children and others from getting sealed." Wazir Chand has a photo-studio at Tilak Nagar and a garments outlet at Uttam Nagar in West Delhi. The Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Tilak Nagar seat, O.P. Babbar, claimed that Wazir Chand, who is his relative, was upset for the past few months as he feared that his shops would also get sealed.
