This Day That Age
The UN General Assembly on November 9 called on Russia to withdraw her troops from Hungary, so that free elections could be held there under UN auspices. By 48 votes to 11 with 16 abstentions, the Assembly voted for a resolution introduced by Italy and co-sponsored by Cuba, Ireland, Pakistan and Peru. India and the Communist countries opposed the resolution and the majority of the Asian-African group abstained. The Assembly also approved a US resolution calling on Russia to stop interfering with medical and food supplies being sent to the Hungarian people and calling for a concerted UN plan to aid the Hungarian refugees. A third resolution introduced by Austria urging immediate action by all UN members to bring immediate aid to Hungary was approved by 67 votes to none with eight abstentions. Hungary and Poland voted in favour of the resolution but the other Communist countries abstained. Before voting on the US resolution the Assembly defeated a series of amendments introduced by India, Ceylon, Burma and Indonesia which would have deleted all references to Soviet action in Hungary.
