KOCHI: The State Government has imposed unscientific tax on sanitary ware, according to All Kerala Tiles & Sanitaryware Dealers Association. President of the association T.C. Varghese said here on Friday that the Government, in the last budget, hiked the tax for tiles and sanitaryware from 12.5 per cent to 20 per cent. This had adversely affected the business, he said. While the dealers were bound by the new tax regime, companies were indulging in direct sales where the increased tax rates were not being charged. He alleged that the companies were selling tiles and sanitary ware directly to builders at 4 per cent tax. He urged the Government to remove the anomaly. The Government withdrew the hike on one item and a similar attitude should be adopted towards other items too, he said. The common man was bearing the brunt of the hike, as sanitary ware is not a luxury item, he said. The association is organising its State conference in Kochi on November 11. Fisheries Minister S. Sarma will inaugurate the function at the Fine Arts Hall.
