MRTS to Velacheri may be delayed

Special Correspondent

Work may be completed by January-end

CHENNAI : Work on extending the Mass Rapid Transit System line from Tiruvanmiyur up to Velacheri is likely to be delayed by a month and may be completed only by the end of January, 2007.

According to Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu, the Southern Railway had planned to complete the Thirumaylai-Velacheri section by this year-end. But heavy rain in the city had affected the work schedule. In all probability the section would become operational from February next year, the Minister said, talking to newsmen here on Friday.

The elevated portion between Thirumaylai and Tiruvanmiyur had been opened for EMU traffic. Completion of the remaining stretch from Tiruvanmiyur to Velacheri was delayed for various factors including condition of the soil. Subsequently, the Railways decided to have an elevated track for this stretch also. But rain delayed the progress of the project.

The Minister said the Rail India Technical Economic Services (RITES) had completed the feasibility study of the Chennai Egmore-Central link and the report would be sent to the State Government for its clearance.

The Southern Railway was also planning to construct a coaching yard at Tambaram in the next financial year, he added.
