TIRUCHI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has refuted All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa's criticism faulting the State Government's handling of the case pertaining to reservation before the Supreme Court. In a statement here on Saturday, Mr. Karunanidhi said the Government had appointed three prominent lawyers, including Soli Sorabjee and Ram Jethmalani, to argue its case. The apex court Bench had made it clear that it was not going to decide on the validity of the inclusion of individual laws (including the Tamil Nadu legislation providing for 69 per cent reservation). It was concerned only with issues of the Ninth Schedule (Article 31 B). This had also been reported in newspapers. Mr. Karunanidhi said Ms. Jayalalithaa had raised "mischievous queries" about the involvement of Pattali Makkal Katchi leader S. Ramadoss and Dravidar Kazhagam leader K. Veeramani. While these leaders had come forward voluntarily to implead themselves in the case, Ms. Jayalalithaa had not bothered to do so. He said Ms. Jayalalithaa had no moral right to make statements on the reservation issue as she had failed to provide a proper explanation before the Supreme Court on a legislation enacted in 1993 to protect 69 per cent reservation.
