CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy has welcomed Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's statement that the situation had arisen for reviewing indirect elections to chairman posts in local bodies, in the wake of the "unfavourable incidents" during the polls. Mr. Krishnasswamy, in a statement here on Saturday, said though it was a victory for democracy that over 1.31 lakh councillors had been elected in the local body elections, subsequent incidents during the elections to chairman posts had shaken the foundation of democracy. In this context, the Chief Minister's observation was significant.
