YANGON: Visiting Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs of the United Nations, Ibrahim Gambari, met Aung San Suu Kyi, detained leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) of Myanmar, at the state guest house here on Saturday, U.N. officials said. It is for the second time Mr. Gambari has been allowed by the Government to meet Ms. Suu Kyi since his last visit in May this year. The meeting took place after Mr. Gambari met Chairman of the Myanmar State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) Senior General Than Shwe in the new capital of Nay Pyi Taw on Saturday morning with both sides disclosing no details so far about their meeting. Hours before meeting Ms. Suu Kyi in the afternoon, Mr. Gambari met some senior leaders of the National Unity Party and the NLD and officials of the Myanmar Women's Affairs Federation as well as Yangon-based foreign diplomats and the U.N. country team in Yangon. Mr. Gambari came on Thursday for the second time since last May on a four-day visit within the context of U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan's good offices mandate. Xinhua
