Salgaocar scrapes past Indian Navy

NEW DELHI: Salgaocar Sports Club overcame Indian Navy 3-2 in the Group II second round match in the qualifying round of the 119th Durand Cup football tournament at the Air Force Ground here on Saturday.

Playing its first match of the tournament after having received a first round bye, Salgaocar went up in the 23rd minute through striker R.C. Prakash, who tapped in the ball on Francis Fernandes's cross from the left. Navy showed its character by holding Salgaocar for the rest of the first half.

On resumption, Felix Chimaokwiu made the first tangible move from the left. His pass to Francis Fernandes was nicely centred in for Patrick Okonji to make it 2-0. The two-goal cushion seemed to satisfy Salgaocar and the Goan team relaxed a bit. Felix had at least three chances, but messed up all with aimless shots.

In the 65th minute, V.S. Abhilash stunned Salgaocar with his acute shot from the left corner. The ball sailed towards the top right corner of the post and the defender Nicolau Colaco's attempt to head it out failed. He did get a slight deflection but the ball was always heading into the post. Ten minutes later, V. Venugoal headed in the equaliser on Samson Antony's corner.

The two teams tried hard for the winner, but it was Felix who redeemed himself in the end when he cut loose from the left beating three defenders on the way before firing from the top of the box in the 86th minute.

Earlier in the day, Border Security Force (BSF), Jalandhar, defeated Indian Air Force (IAF) 3-1.Harjit Singh scored in the first and 57th minutes and Gurjit Singh Atwal netted the second goal, in the eighth minute. The IAF had its consolation in the 87th minute when W. P. Singh slotted in

The results: BSF 3 (Harjit Singh 2, Gurjit Singh Atwal) bt IAF 1 (W.P. Singh); Salgaocar SC, Goa, 3 (R.C. Prakash, Patrick Okonji, Felix Chimaokwiu) bt Indian Navy XI 2 (V.S. Abhilash, V. Venugopal). — Principal Correspondent
