Tuni (East Godavari): Union Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallamraju has said that establishing the 29th Coast Guard Station at Kakinada is a major achievement of the UPA Government. It is essential in view of availability of major oil and gas resources in the district headquarters. Speaking to newsmen here on Saturday, Mr. Pallamraju said that the facility, for which Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy laid foundation on Friday, would help step up vigil along the East Coast, from Kakinada to Chennai. He said that there were 28 such stations in the country. The facility in Kakinada was the second one in the State, the first one being in Visakhapatnam. Mr. Pallamraju recalled that during the Second World War, Kakinada was the target for enemies. Since then, the erstwhile Madras Coast Guard station had been keeping vigil on the movements of ships and smuggling activities. The Union Minister said that the station in Kakinada would control illicit operations of diesel smugglers.
