Meenu back to winning ways

KOCHI: She has virtually been off the circuit for the last one-and-a-half years, but former Kerala women's champion Meenu Raj proved that she has lost none of her touch by winning the youth girls' title in the 55th State table tennis championship at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium here.

The youth field had all the top women, but the 19-year-old Meenu, a second year engineering student at the Cochin University here but representing Thiruvananthapuram, won the final against Kozhikode's Lakshmi Prabha rather comfortably at 4-1.

"I just resumed four days before this State championship. I don't get any time for the game now," said Meenu.

Thiruvananthapuram's S. Sreeraj bagged the youth boys' title.

Ernakulam's Reshma Susan defeated Alappuzha's Maria Rony and lifted the cadet girls' gold.

The results:

Youth boys': Singles: Final: S. Sreeraj (Tvm) bt Vishnu Narayanan (Alp) 11-7, 11-6, 11-8, 11-7. Semifinals: Sreeraj bt Shyam Narayanan (Alp) 4-1; Vishnu bt Angelo Porathur (Tsr) 4-2.

Doubles final: Shyam Narayanan-Sharath V. Joy (Alp) bt S. Sreeraj-E.N. Tariq (Tvm) 9-11, 11-4, 11-9, 11-4.

Youth girls': Final: Meenu Raj (Tvm) bt Lakshmi Prabha (Kzd) 11-9, 11-5, 11-6, 7-11, 11-3. Semifinals: Meenu Raj bt Sruthi Renjith (Kzd) 4-3; P. Lakshmi Prabha bt Atheena K. Lathif (Idk) 4-1.

Doubles final: M.R. Ranjana- Deepa Rose Francis (Tsr) bt Jincy Rose-Sruthi Renjith (Kzd) 6-11, 13-11, 16-14, 11-9.

Cadet girls': Final: Reshma Susan (Ekm) bt Maria Rony (Alp) 7-11, 11-6, 10-12, 11-8, 11-2.
