Principal Correspondent
Bangalore: Chris Cairns was at his effervescent best as he fielded queries ranging from early retirement to his alleged remarks against Sunil Gavaskar. The former New Zealand allrounder spoke to the media on the sidelines of a brand-promotion function. He was accompanied by Daniel Vettori. On retirement: I wanted to make sure I retired when I was on top of my game. I have a young family and I had been playing for 16 years and New Zealand is in good hands. The amount of training ... it was all getting just too much and I had been away from my family for a while. On the Ponting-Pawar controversy and his alleged remarks on Gavaskar: We have to see things in the particular context and situation. But that doesn't mean disrespecting anybody especially in India. Anyway things seem to have been sorted out. It's an unfortunate incident and I am sure when Ponting looks back at it it's very embarrassing for him. And as far as me comparing the incident with that of (Sunil) Gavaskar walking out on Lillee, I think it got lost in translation. There is no comparison!" On his prized scalp: Tendulkar's wicket, I guess. To bowl him out was a special moment. Maybe it was due to a lapse in concentration. On Stephen Fleming: "He is a very solid individual. He is an unflappable character and a very good leader. On his strained relationship with Lee Germon: I have no bad words for him. I was probably 24 or 25 then and still growing up. Things probably could have been handled better.
