BHUBANESWAR : Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has approved a project to benefit one lakh people belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, beneficiaries of Indira Awas Yojana scheme and small farmers through pisciculture by the Employment Mission. According to an official release issued on Saturday, one lakh farm ponds will be constructed in two years in the farms of the beneficiaries. These tanks will provide life-saving irrigation to at least four lakh acres of agricultural land during kharif and two lakh acres in rabi. The project will be implemented in the districts of Koraput, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Nawrangpur, Malkangiri, Nuapada, Bolangir, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Phulbani, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar. The Chief Minister has directed the Revenue, Panchayatiraj, Fisheries and Animal Resources Department, and Employment Mission to work in tandem for successful implementation of the project. The beneficiaries will be provided with irrigation tanks/farm ponds either on their own land or on the land to be given to them on lease by the Government. They will also be given required support for pisciculture.
