Dengue toll goes up to 67

NEW DELHI: The death toll due to dengue here in the Capital rose to 67 on Saturday with the dreaded fever claiming one more victim in the past 24 hours.

The latest casualty was 25-year-old Laxmi who passed away at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

AIIMS also admitted five new patients during the past 24 hours, while four patients were discharged during this period.

Hema Malini felicitated

New Delhi: Actor and MP Hema Malini was felicitated for her contribution to classical dance on Saturday.

She along with noted classical singer Girija Devi were awarded the `Vitasta Award' by the Sopori Academy of Music and Performing Arts which is conducting a two-day music festival at the Kamini auditorium here.

Praising the academy for its work in promoting classical music and dance among the youth, Hema Malini said that parents should also encourage their wards to take up these arts in order to preserve the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the country.

Interest rates hiked

NEW DELHI: Punjab National Bank has announced yet another increase in its fixed deposit interest rates for 180 days to less than two years. PNB Chairman and Managing Director S. C. Gupta said the idea was to give a fillip to the country's economic development. The hike in fixed deposits would take care of the reduced margins by better management of recovery in the asset portfolio, he added.

Brahmins' conclave

New Delhi: Brahmins from different parts of the country will congregate in Delhi on Monday to discuss the future and need to adopt a homogeneous plan to `restore' Brahmins participation in the society.

They will participate at `Brahmanda Gajana' organised by All India Brahmins Federation (AIBF) near Akshardham Temple here to highlight the need for Brahmin unity. According to a release issued here by the AIBF scores of Brahmin intellectuals will attend the meeting.

Winners finalised

NEW DELHI: The jury for the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) National Award for Excellence in Corporate Governance headed by Justice V.N. Khare, former Chief Justice of India, met here on Saturday to finalise the winners.

Comprising a galaxy of eminent personalities from the Government and the corporate sector, the jury finalised the winners of the ICSI National Award for Excellence in Corporate Governance 2006 and Life Time Achievement Award for Translating Excellence in Corporate Governance into Reality.
