NEW DELHI: Thousands of people visited the eighth annual Diabetes Health Mela at Talkatora Garden here on Saturday. The three-day mela is aimed at creating awareness about diabetes and its complications. With nearly two million people suffering from the disease in Delhi and adjoining areas, it is expected to witness a huge attendance on Sunday. Organised by the Delhi Diabetes Research Centre, the mela is also focusing on various health problems faced by call centre and information technology units' employees. At the mela, various kinds of diabetes-related check-ups are being offered free of cost to the patients. Senior doctors are providing counselling to people on how to lead a healthy life and overcome the disease and its many side effects. At the inauguration, Delhi Diabetes Research Centre president A. K. Jhingan said while the "Prevent Obesity Prevent Diabetes" campaign had been launched a couple of years ago, efforts are now being made to tackle the problem of obesity and diabetes in children, who are the future of the country. Dr. Jhingan said there are 33 million people with diabetes in India and the numbers are growing. At this rate India might have over 75 million people with diabetes by 2025. "The rising levels of obesity are likely to drive the prevalence of diabetes even higher than the present forecasts which do not take into account changes in obesity epidemic," he said.
