Rich tributes paid to Major Gopi Singh

Staff Reporter

Major Gopi Singh

NEW DELHI: A memorial meeting was organised here over the weekend to pay homage to Major Gopi Singh on the first anniversary of his martyrdom.

Major Gopi Singh had laid down his life fighting terrorists in Arin village of Kashmir Valley on November 10 last year.

Ironically, Major Gopi Singh, who had served as ADC to former President K. R. Narayanan and also to President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, died at the same time when Mr. Narayanan was being cremated.

During the memorial meeting over the weekend, participants recalled that the officer was exceptional in every sense of the term. S. N. Sahu, Director in the Prime Minister's Office, paying his homage recalled his association with Major Gopi Singh for four-and-a-half years in Rashtrapati Bhavan.

He said the officer was a phenomenon and represented the best qualities of a soldier, poet and human being.

Mr. Sahu referred to Major Gopi Singh's diary where he wrote that all attempts to convert Kashmir into a zone of clash of civilisation must be foiled.

Other friends who were closely associated with Major Gopi Singh underlined his outstanding qualities as a poet and humanist. Raj Vaisoha expressed his amazement at Major Gopi Singh's ability to write such fine pieces of poetry in spite of his hard duty and punishing schedule as a soldier.

Major Gopi Singh had been honoured with Shaurya Chakra for his gallantry and bravery.
